YOGA RETREAT 2020

9th - 16th May 2020 – ALL LEVELS ARE WELCOME INCLUDING PURE BEGINNERS

LOCATION - Ladies and Gentlemen why not escape with me for a very special yoga retreat on Kos Island. A week of self care, yoga, SUP yoga, yin yoga, good food, fresh air, nature and total relaxation in Greece. The location for your yoga retreat is Kefalos, a picturesque and tranquil resort on the southwestern tip of Kos Island. Kefalos is separated into two parts; the traditional village situated on the hilltop, and the waterfront called Kamari that is the village's harbour. Kefalos village is close by with supermarkets, bakery, pharmacy, post office, ATM and a doctor.  Opposite Kamari Bay is the small island of Kastri with the church of St. Nicholas, one of the most photographed and iconic landmarks of Kos Island, in fact of the whole Dodecanese. The area has something to please everyone … stunning uncrowded sandy beaches with crystal clear water, lovely walks, water sports, boat trips, an archeological site, and excellent Greek tavernas, restaurants and bars that line the seafront. Kefalos is the perfect location for your week, as everything you may need is close by. Expect to leave feeling like a new you, and expect to return time and time again as so many do.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION - Settled majestically on a hillside and situated in 3.5 acres of sculptured private grounds, is a very unique home called The Tower House. The Tower House has been designed with space and peace in mind. Only 15 minutes from Kos Airport, it is 800 metres from the sea and about 3km from the village of Kefalos. The only sounds that you are likely to hear are birds singing and the sound of silence, as you take in the magnificent uninterrupted panoramic coastal views.  Every window at the property looks out over beautiful Kamari Bay with the infamous Kastri Island in the distance, where you can watch the local fishing boats leaving and returning with their catch and the windsurfers gliding across the bay. Walking down to the beach takes about 10-15 minutes, with an uphill stroll coming back!

The Tower House is very light and spacious and has various areas dotted throughout. As you enter the villa you come into a large living area with comfortable seating for up to 16 people, Smart TV and iPod docking station. There is a circular room at one end, and at the other a picture window with breathtaking views. There is a large separate dining room off of the kitchen, which opens out onto a big sunny outside terrace with seating, and yes, you guessed it … more stunning views!

The modern and well equipped kitchen has a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave/combination oven, large gas oven with electric grill and 5 gas burners. There is everything you need. On this floor there is cute little library/seating area, and downstairs you will find a washing machine and laundry room. There is WiFi throughout the house and in all of the bedrooms, should you choose to connect with the outside world!

There are 8 twin bedrooms which are decorated in a simple Greek style and situated over 2 floors (5 on the upper level and 3 on the lower level). The rooms are spacious enough for two people to share comfortably. Single or double occupancy is available. All of the bedrooms are similar in design and layout, with uninterrupted sea views and a terrace or balcony. Each room has twin beds, en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning and hairdryer, as well as complimentary toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. The bedrooms are beautifully named Joy, Grace, Peace, Hope, Truth, Mercy, Faith and Blessing. In the extensive grounds there is a large private swimming pool (45m2) with sunbeds and umbrellas. There are little seating and relaxing areas dotted throughout the grounds so you can always find a place of solitude to relax and reflect undisturbed.

THE YOGAOver the course of this week we will practice various forms of yoga, mainly Hatha/Hatha Flow, Yin Yoga and Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga. My classes are taught in English, but I also speak basic German and French. My approach to yoga is to deliver well rounded comprehensive classes which are available to all. It´s a practical approach to yoga, so you won´t find lots of chanting and spiritual practices, instead we focus more on the connection between the mind, the body and the breath in order to boost physical and mental wellbeing.

It´s not about pushing or straining, but about listening to our bodies and working in a non-competitive environment (which means non-competitive with ourselves as well as with others!). We will use props when needed for support and correct alignment, since we are all built differently. I only adjust when necessary and allow you to explore your bodies in a kind and nurturing way. I demonstrate throughout the classes, guiding you and explaining the postural alignment as we go. I show modifications to asanas so that you can work within your own personal limits and abilities and not feel intimidated. Yoga is filled with Indian Sanskrit words and its own lingo, which can be confusing for some. I keep it nice and simple so that all you need to focus on is your breathing and your sensations. I offer a mindful practice where you can truly connect with and listen to your body - which is always speaking to us! We spend so much time being frantic we have forgotten how to breathe and how to listen. On this week you will become friends once again with your body and deliver it the kindness that it, and you, truly deserve. We will create new supportive habits and release habits and thoughts that no longer serve us. After this week of yoga you will have a better understanding of your body, of your body's and mind’s possibilities and limitations, and of the signals that it sends to you.

LOCATION OF CLASSES - We will make full use of the different areas at The Tower House for our yoga sessions (the roof terrace, the inside space, poolside and even in the pool!). As well as this we will take a trip together to my beautiful outdoor yoga center in Mastichari overlooking the sea, as well as a couple of sessions of Stand Up Paddleboard yoga down in Kefalos Bay. Variety is the spice of life, and I guarantee you will not get bored!

MORNING YOGA - Our morning classes will energise us for the day ahead and at the same time gently build strength. The classes will be a mindful practice of Hatha and gentle Hatha Flow with breath work, body scanning and of course an essential savasana relaxation to close the session.

LATE AFTERNOON YOGA - After a beautiful day of either exploring your surroundings or just completely relaxing and recharging at home by the pool, we will have a more restorative practice allowing you to deeply relax and unwind and really tune into your body free of distractions. We will explore yin yoga, guided meditations, yoga nidra and a deeper savasana.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARD YOGA - SUP YOGA is SO much easier than you think, and it is for all levels from total beginner and beyond. The feeling of doing yoga on the water is incomparable! You will get a full body gentle stretch, with the added benefit of calming the mind as well as creating greater flexibility, strength and staying power. The boards are really big and stable, big enough to perform the poses on with ease, and we work in shallow and flat water, so you are completely safe. People are always genuinely surprised at how easy and comfortable it is. A SUP YOGA session will leave you feeling open, balanced and calm.  There is no judgement and no pressure in a SUP YOGA class – so just relax and enjoy!

YIN YOGA - Yin Yoga is a deeper, slower yoga practice. The beautiful meditative practice of Yin Yoga gives us time to just be still, deepen and slow the breath, and be in the present moment. In my gentle Yin Yoga practice we come into a pose to our maximum "edge" (where you are being sufficiently challenged without straining or hurting yourself), and then hold the pose for some minutes, stretching and targeting the deep connective tissues between the muscles, and also the fascia throughout the body … places we don't really get to in a regular yoga practice! We stay still in the pose, only adjusting when space has been created within tissues inviting us to go gently further, to our new edge. As we stay in the pose, we observe what the body and mind are telling us in the present moment, from a calm perspective. Sensations (physical and emotional) will arise as we get deep into the body and into any stored tensions and emotions. Yin teaches us to sit with this, and deal with whatever arises one breath at a time ... finding a place of comfort in a not-always-so-comfortable place. This is a great skill to take into our everyday lives! Yin Yoga calms our nervous system, balances our energy systems and regulates our energy flow. It gently reconnects us with our bodies and provides a space for the body to deeply relax, slowing the overactive mind. A Yin Yoga session will leave you with a real sense of openness, peace and calm, both emotionally and physically, and will encourage you to be more present in your life.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MEWhen I was diagnosed with a chronic auto-immune disease I decided to get much more serious about my yoga practice, instead of just dipping in when I was in the mood. My diagnosis took me on an incredible journey of research and discovery about myself and my mind/body/spirit that I am still on today. The main catalyst for me getting sick in the first place was a long period of (emotional) stress. Stress will always get you. If you don’t deal with your stress it will manifest in your physical body somehow, somewhere. That’s just a fact. All my research led me to the same conclusion - the best way to properly deal with stress is through embracing a regular yoga practice. Throughout my illness I have used yoga, meditation and breath work as a tool to support me and to help me to cope. Yoga has helped me so much, and it continues to help me in so many ways. I am now much calmer, and I can be more present and less reactionary. I am also free of taking any medications to mask symptoms. As well as this, I can really hear and understand my body, and my stress signals, and react appropriately. I appreciate people and nature and life so much more, as I am no longer hovering on the outskirts looking in. I am now a real player in my life story! I feel gratitude for my continuing journey every day - good or bad. My mission is to share the amazing benefits and healing power of yoga with as many people as I can, as long as I walk on this beautiful earth. I am fully qualified to teach Yoga, Yin Yoga, SUP Yoga and Aerial Yoga, as well as being a qualified Reike Healer. I have been teaching yoga on Kos Island for 9 years, and stand up paddleboard yoga for 6 years. I love what I do, and I can´t wait to share it with you!

WHAT TO EXPECTThis yoga escape does not come with a rigid timetable, and as we go through the week together, we can adjust times and plans if need be. I have attended many retreats and yoga workshops, and whilst each of them have brought something in their own special way, I have felt a certain amount of pressure to constantly be a part of what is happening and attend strictly set meal times 2 or 3 times per day, when I really wanted alone time, and to be a little bit unsociable now and then!

I want to give you a yoga experience with a bit more freedom of choice. We will eat breakfast/brunch together every day after the morning yoga session, and we will eat out together twice during the week, and this is all included in the package price. The house has full self-catering facilities so you can choose what, when and where you eat, whether that is at home or out in the resort. You can choose to spend time on your own without feeling that you are not respecting the schedule or alienating yourself. You can be as sociable or unsociable as you like!

THINGS TO DOThere is so much to do and see on Kos! You can arrange local car hire easily once you are here and the island is really simple to navigate, with one main road which stretches from one end to the other! Maybe you want to take one of the great value tours on offer by Joyce from JD Tours, who offers trips to Nissyros the Volcanic Island, Kos Town, Kefalos village, the local vineyard and honey factory and much more!  If you want to have a go at windsurfing, sailing or stand up paddleboarding then we can introduce you to our friends at Kefalos Windsurfing. A great team with lots of teaching experience who will give you a fun experience on the water.
